Many exciting events await you at the BCP Event Center.
November 18, 19 & 20 – THE ODD COUPLE (Female Version)
The Odd Couple is a 1965 Broadway play by Neil Simon, followed by a successful film and television series. The plot concerns two mismatched roommates, one neat and uptight, the other more easygoing and slovenly. In the original play these were male; Simon also made a version for a pair of female roommates, called The Female Odd Couple.
It is this version that Leara Clausing will bring to the BCP stage in October of 2010. Auditions will be held on September 15th at BCP with dress rehearsals scheduled for October 17th. The cast will consist of 8 rolls; Olive Madison (the slob) and Florence Unger (the neatnik) and their four female friends Sylvie, Micky, Renee and Vera and their upstairs neighbors Manolo and Jesus who are two Spanish guys who speak very broken English.
The play has its origins in the work of Danny Simon (Neil Simon’s brother) who is also a writer. But soon he handed the work to brother Neil. The show, directed by Mike Nichols, ran for 966 performances and won several Tony Awards, including Best Play.
In the female version, Florence Unger is a recently separated housewife, domestic goddess and shopper (and was a bookkeeper before she married) who moves in with her friend Olive Madison, an unkempt producer of a prime time television news show. Their girlfriends (among them a compulsive smoker…another is a policewoman) are a fun bunch, and the antics of the upstairs Spanish neighbors, complete the cast of characters.
Open auditions for this female version of The Odd Couple will be held at BCP Theater on:
- Friday, October 1 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm
- Saturday, October 2 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm
6 females (including the 2 main characters) and 2 males will be needed for this production….and, as usual a full production crew is required. So whether you want to be back stage or on stage…..come to the auditions to learn more about how to be involved.
This production will be the first at BCP for Leara Clausing, who is a 35 year veteran of the stage. Leara is also conducting the Actors Workshop at BCP, with a new class beginning in January.
February 25, 26 & 27 – STEEL MAGNOLIAS
Steel Magnolias is a 1989 comedy-drama film about the bond among a group of Southern women in northwest Louisiana. The movie is based on a 1987 off-Broadway play by Robert Harling and on the author’s experience with the death of his sister. The title suggests the female characters are as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel. BCP’s own Creative Director Leara Clausing will direct this fun production at the BCP Theater & Events Center in February of 2011.
The action centers on Truvy’s beauty parlour and some women who regularly gather there. The drama begins on the morning of Shelby’s wedding to Jackson and covers events over the next three years, including Shelby’s decision to have a child despite having Type 1 diabetes and the complications that result from the decision. We also get a glimpse of the unlikely friendship between Clairee and Ouiser; Annelle’s transformation from a shy, anxious newcomer in town to a good-time girl and then to a revival-tent Christian; and Truvy’s relationships with the men in her family. Although the main storyline involves Shelby, her mother and Shelby’s medical battles, the underlying group-friendship among all six women is prominent throughout the drama.
Mark your calendar to join the fun….tickets will go on sale in early February at Mail Boxes Etc. Boquete. Audition dates will be announced in December of 2010.
